Hunter Gather is pleased to announce Chance Encounters, an exhibition featuring new series of prints on paper by Cassie Normandy White. The opening reception will be held on Friday, March 25th, 2016 from 6-8:30pm, with an artist talk from 6:30-7pm.

Cassie Normandy White’s process is a studied combination of intuition, probability, and control, with a strong dose of creative play. Departing from the traditional printmaking structure, White works primarily with fabric that she cuts into organic shapes and “seasons” with vibrant inks; once prepared, she assembles and layers the fabric pieces into abstract compositions before passing them multiple times through the press, entrusting the final outcome to the process itself. At times spanning the length of a wall and at other times small and intimate, the results are a series of lively biomorphic formations that draw on our human compulsion to seek relationships and patterns. In White’s four-part wall installation, “The Great Escape,” an animated, creaturesque arrangement seems to be caught mid-movement as it emerges from the edges and travels across the surface of the paper. White is particularly interested in unraveling the connections between visual stimuli and human perception—how we inherently assign meaning to shape and color—which the artist likens to a Rorschach inkblot test or the popular pastime of watching clouds form into recognizable objects or people. “There is a basic satisfaction,” White states, “that humans get from not only identifying patterns but from identifying their own unique, possibly personal, patterns.”

Cassie Normandy White currently resides in Corpus Christi, where she works from her home studio as well as in the print shop at Texas A&M.  She completed her BFA in Printmaking at Texas State University, and has exhibited at Bowerbird Gallery in San Marcos, Blue Orange Gallery in Houston, and The Pump Project in Austin.
