Hunter Gather is pleased to present Here in the Middle, the gallery’s first solo-exhibition of works by Houston-based artist Rix Jennings.
In his new body of work, contemporary artist Rix Jennings uses gesture, line, and form to navigate the spaces between everyday life and the mysteries of the unconscious. Here in the Middle features a series of large-scale charcoal and pencil drawings that form a continual landscape, steering the eye from unknown planes to fragments of recognizable objects and figures. At once spontaneous and meticulous, each drawing records overlapping thoughts, questions, or moments in visual form. Jennings states: “This life feels like it’s in the middle, an island that lies between two regions, which we glimpse only fleetingly or understand only in poetic fragments.”
Alongside the drawings, the exhibition includes journals that are intrinsic to the artist’s process. For Jennings, the daily practice of writing and sketching acts as a catalyst for forming connections, which might have originally appeared irrational or disjointed. As a result, the drawings are characterized by a strangeness that seems out of this world — perhaps, however, they reflect the odd, beautiful, and peculiar that surrounds us everyday.
Join us for the opening reception of Rix Jennings: Here in the Middle on Saturday,
September 12th from 4-6pm.
