May 29th – July 25th, 2015
Opening Reception Friday, May 29th 6-8pm
Gallery Talk & Demonstration Friday, June 5th 6-8pm
Fresh looks at the many different ways in which contemporary artists are reconsidering, re-examining, and pushing traditional printmaking. Using unconventional materials, Colorado artists Laura Grossett and Cheryl Rogers explore print as three-dimensional form. In Grossett’s installations, larger-than-life bees and flocks of birds made with screen-printed mylar and recycled paperboard come off the wall as if caught in mid-motion. In these metaphorical constructions, animal instinct embodies the turbulence of human interactions.
Interested in energy, mass, and movement, Rogers’ kinetic forms whirl from paper to printed fabric sculptures, examining the relationship between implied and tangible space.
For her Archeological Dress series, Sandria Hu made plates from children’s christening gowns overlaid with symbols, found objects, and texts; the printing plates are in turn embedded into an accompanying series of paintings that extend the narrative and investigate notions of loss and memory.
Cassie Normandy White utilizes fabric as a means to experiment with the printing process. She arranges individually inked pieces of fabric into animated compositions that merge and extend across several sheets of paper, addressing notions of saturation, emptiness, flow, and stagnation.
For her current series of prints, Marie Leterme is using found objects as a print matrix; whether it’s fragments from buildings devastated by Ike or flowers from Leterme’s garden, each impression holds memories and preserves each object’s personal history. Similarly, Cathie Kayser’s prints incorporate found imagery of birds, charts, maps, and nets as signifiers for stability, freedom, loss, and happenstance.
Fresh features six artists with distinct approaches to printmaking. The opening reception for Fresh will be held at Hunter Gather on Friday, May 29th from 6:00-8:00pm. There will be a gallery talk and demonstration on Friday, June 5th from 6:00-8:00pm and the exhibition will run May 29th – July 25th, 2015.
